Vappu (May 1st) is one of Finland’s most cherished celebrations — a joyful explosion of balloons, bubbles, picnics, and sweet treats. And no Vappu is complete without a sugary munkki in hand. But what if you want to take the tradition up a notch? Enter: craft beer.
Beer and doughnuts might not seem like obvious soulmates, but trust me — they’re a match made in malty heaven. For the classic Finnish munkki, I considered pairing it with a Weiz or a Milk stout. Of course, the traditional companion is sima — the homemade sweet mead we brew for Vappu, full of sugar and lemon, and something we look forward to every spring.
Ayinger - Urweisse 5,8%

This traditional Dunkelweizen from Ayinger is a standout. Deep amber in color and naturally cloudy from yeast, it offers bold wheat character balanced by rich malt. Notes of banana bread, clove, and a subtle toasty bitterness that plays beautifully with the munkki’s sugary crust. It’s full-bodied and lively, with a smooth, fruity-malty aroma that instantly draws you in. A true classic that makes every bite and sip feel like a celebration.
Whether you're picnicking in the park or enjoying brunch at home, Vappu is all about celebrating the arrival of summer — and let’s be honest, beer pairs with just about everything (yes, even alcohol-free options!).
During Vappu, there’s usually a lot happening around the city, so I headed to Vapputori — soaking in the atmosphere, scouting for delicious snacks, and just enjoying the joyful energy of the day.
So grab something special, fry (or buy) your munkit, and toast to spring the craft way.
